Yes you can just use a router and have both plugged into it, while setting up a multiplayer game there is an option for just LAN under the internet section. Have you actually managed to get multiplayer over LAN working?

If it pulls up the worker screen it's likely not recognizing you're in the field or something. When you press the create job button though, you may or may not see a field work option.
